SR 20 3R BAY COUNTY
Gortemoller Engineering, Inc. served as the Prime Design Consultant providing professional engineering services for the 15.7-mile resurfacing, rehabilitation, and restoration project in Bay County, FL. The project included a park-n-ride facility, left turn lane construction, guardrail replacement, and drainage improvements.
The park-n-ride study was requested by FDOT District 3. An existing park-n-ride on SR 77 was being removed as part of the widening project. GE was tasked with identifying an alternative location. Three locations were evaluated and a site next to NWFWMD Pitt and Sylvan Springs was selected. This popular attraction creates a safety a safety hazard with cars parking along both side of the road. GE coordinated with the NWFWMD to provide a dual use parking facility that increases safety and parking for the popular canoe and kayak launch area. The study was used to implement the parking lot used on the resurfacing project.
There was also a safety study done at Blue Springs Road. Blue Springs Road is a narrow road that had been paved by Bay County. Traffic Applications started directing traffic to use this road as a route to Panama City Beach. Based on this change in traffic patterns as well as limited site distance, there was an increase in rear end crashes. A study was prepared to evaluate the crashes as well as acceptable improvements. A left turn lane was determined to be the best alternative with a positive B/C. The study was used to obtain saftey funding and was ultimately implemented into the resurfacing project.
